SOUNDS is not a performance you simply watch — it is one you feel through your entire body. It is a physical ode to the power of music: sounds you don’t just hear, but that resonate and vibrate throughout your whole being.
Choreographer and artistic director Donna Chittick weaves Caribbean rhythms, African influences and hip hop into a pulsating, high-energy experience where dance, music and vibrating energy merge. She takes you on a personal journey back to her roots in Sint Maarten, where music is first and foremost something to be felt. How does sound affect your body, your emotions, your energy?
The vitality of Caribbean music — the driving rhythms of soca and konpa, alongside new sounds from Africa — forms the foundation of this work. Within this euphoria, hip hop, Caribbean influences and South African movement language blend into a powerful whole.
Four dancers and one vocalist bring a lived Afro-Caribbean energy to the stage. Their movements are instinctive responses to familiar sounds — echoes from Africa, carried across the Caribbean and resonating through voice and rhythm. Music is both their origin and their compass: the energy that gave birth to them and continues to guide them. In their purest form, without masks, they reveal what music sets in motion within their bodies.
Soca, konpa, hip hop and African sounds become fuel for movement rooted in identity, community and memory. Music becomes visible and tangible through light, vibration and raw physical expression.

SOUNDS – Music as source of joy, connection, and resilience through movement. SOUNDS is geen voorstelling die je bekijkt, het is er een die je door je hele lichaam voelt. Het is een fysieke ode aan de kracht van muziek, aan klanken die je niet alleen hoort, maar die door je hele lijf trillen.
Choreograaf en artistiek leider Donna Chittick verweeft Caribische ritmes, Afrikaanse invloeden en hiphop tot een zinderende, hoog-energetische ervaring waarin dans, muziek en vibrerende energie samensmelten. Donna neemt je mee in een persoonlijke reis naar haar wortels op Sint Maarten, waar muziek vooral iets is om te voelen. Wat doet geluid met je lichaam, je emoties, je energie?
Ritme als oorsprong en kompas
De levendigheid van de Caribische muziek - de opzwepende ritmes van soca en konpa, en nieuwe geluiden uit Afrika - vormt de basis. In deze euforie versmelten hiphop, Caribische invloeden en Zuid-Afrikaanse bewegingstaal tot een krachtig geheel. Vier dansers en een zangeres brengen een doorleefde Afro-Caribische energie het podium op. Hun bewegingen zijn een instinctieve reactie op klanken die ze herkennen, geluiden uit Afrika, meegevoerd naar de Caribische eilanden en weerklinkend in zang en ritme.
De muziek vormt hun oorsprong en hun kompas; het is de energie die hen heeft voortgebracht en richting geeft. In hun puurste vorm, zonder masker, tonen ze wat muziek in hun lichaam teweegbrengt. Soca, konpa, hiphop en Afrikaanse klanken worden brandstof voor bewegingen die ontstaan, geworteld in identiteit, gemeenschap en herinnering. Muziek wordt zichtbaar en voelbaar in licht, vibraties en pure fysieke expressie.
SOUNDS viert Afro-Caribisch erfgoed: muziek als bron van vreugde, verbinding en veerkracht. Het echoot generaties vóór, tijdens en na de Trans-Atlantische slavernij en laat zien hoe klank gemeenschappen vormt en verbindt.
